Mommy makeovers offer comprehensive, customizable options for full-body rejuvenation, from breast enhancement to body contouring.

Although the mommy makeover before and after transformations are undeniable, many prospective patients tend to be nervous about the signs of surgery afterward. To help ease these concerns, I’ve put together some tips to help you understand and minimize mommy makeover scars.

Types of Mommy Makeover Scars

Before we get into scar management, let’s first cover the common types of incisions that are involved in delivering your mommy makeover results:

  • Breast Augmentation Scars: The good news about breast augmentation scarring is that it tends to be hidden discreetly, whether in the darker border of the areolae, in the fold beneath the breasts, or even in the underarms.
  • Breast Lift Scars: The extent of breast lift scars depends on the degree of ptosis (or sagging) in the breasts. The breast lift anchor scar is the most involved, with an incision around each areola and a vertical scar from the areola to the inframammary fold that then extends horizontally. Even though most breast lifts will have a vertical scar (with or without the anchor addition), these fade and flatten over time.
  • Tummy Tuck Scars: The usual tummy tuck scar is placed low on the abdomen and spans from hip to hip. Most patients can conceal this incision line with underwear or bikini bottoms. The scar encircling the bellybutton is also well-hidden and hardly noticeable.
  • Liposuction Scars: Liposuction requires very short (usually ¼ inch) and well-concealed incisions. These, too, heal well and do not attract much attention.

8 Tips for the Best Mommy Makeover Scar Outcome

#1 Choose an Excellent Surgeon

Choosing an experienced board-certified plastic surgeon to perform your mommy makeover procedure is the foundation for a safe and positive surgery experience with natural-looking, discreet results.

A skilled surgeon will employ advanced techniques to minimize scarring during the procedure and provide comprehensive postoperative care guidance. When researching a plastic surgeon, be sure to take into account their credentials, before and after photos, and real patient reviews.

#2 Follow All Postoperative Instructions

This should go without saying, but familiarizing yourself with your plastic surgeon’s guidance for post-surgical care—and committing to following it—is essential to a smooth recovery. Understanding what to expect can help you prepare for the healing process. You can also always reach out with questions or if you have any concerns.

#3 Practice Proper Incision Care

Part of your recovery instructions will include how to clean and dress your incisions to prevent infection and promote healing. In some cases, drains may be placed to collect wound fluid and prevent seromas from forming. You’ll also want to avoid exposing your incisions to excessive moisture, sunlight, or harsh chemicals that can compromise the healing tissue and exacerbate scarring.

#4 Wear Compression Garments

Compression garments support wound healing and help control swelling after surgery. They can also help reduce tension on your incisions, which is better for your scar result. Consistent use, as directed by your plastic surgeon, can thus lead to better cosmetic outcomes for your results and incision lines.

#5 Apply Silicone-Based Products

Silicone gel or sheets can notably improve the texture and color of scars by hydrating the skin and creating a protective barrier. Most products are applied directly to the scar and can easily be incorporated into your normal skincare routine. Consult with your plastic surgeon before purchasing scar sheets.

#6 Be Patient

Your scars will need time to mature (usually 12 to 18 months to achieve their “final” appearance). During this time, they usually begin to grow lighter, flatter, and become less and less noticeable. Stay patient and positive and trust that the work you are putting in now will lead to even better results in the long run.

#7 Consider Nonsurgical Scar Treatment Options

Once your scar has reached maturity, you can consider other options to further fade its appearance, such as laser skin resurfacing or microneedling. Your plastic surgeon and aesthetic provider can help you decide the best treatment plan for you.
