Tummy Tuck

Weight changes, pregnancy, and the natural aging process can stretch the abdomen’s muscles and skin until they lose their ability to “snap back” to their formerly taut and toned condition. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Scott Newman, a tummy tuck specialist, helps patients from Westchester, Long Island, and NYC restore firm abdominal contours with body contouring surgery. Individuals who adopt and maintain a healthy lifestyle can have very long-lasting and fulfilling tummy tuck results.

What is a tummy tuck?

A tummy tuck is a plastic surgery procedure designed for New York patients who want to restore a tight and contoured midsection. It is never a one-size-fits-all surgery. Based on your needs, Dr. Newman may remove fat and skin or tighten underlying muscles or both. These decisions will depend upon the condition of the abdominal area and the amount of rejuvenation desired by each patient.

What does a tummy tuck do?

Tummy tuck surgery gives patients many immediately visible benefits, which include:

  • A flatter midsection with smoother and tighter skin
  • Tightened abdominal muscles
  • A reduction in loose skin in the treatment area
  • Elimination of most or all stretch marks
  • Reshaped belly button for a very natural look

A tummy tuck is a surgical procedure that may not be an ideal option for all patients. First of all, for patients who have only mild symptoms, surgery may not be necessary.

How much does a tummy tuck cost in NYC & Westchester County?

The cost of a tummy tuck depends on a variety of factors, including whether you are having a full or mini tummy tuck and whether it is being combined with other procedures. Dr. Newman offers patient financing to help qualified patients afford to pursue their desired improvements. It’s important to consider a surgeon’s qualifications over prices. The best tummy tuck surgeons in the NYC area have rigorous training and extensive experience performing the procedure.

Are there tummy tuck alternatives that don’t involve surgery?

Dr. Newman offers advanced technology that can help some patients improve their concerns without surgery. Options include:

  • Renuvion® skin tightening uses focused radiofrequency (RF) energy and helium plasma released just below the skin’s surface to firm and tighten the skin through increased collagen production.
  • SculpSure® uses laser energy to melt fat without harming the outer layer of skin.

Results take weeks to develop with these treatments. Their results are not as significant as a tummy tuck, which offers the most substantial and longest-lasting rejuvenation for moderate to severe abdominal issues.

What is the difference between a mini tummy tuck and a regular tummy tuck?

Certain patients from Long Island, NYC, and Westchester are candidates for the less invasive mini tummy tuck, but most require the full (complete) technique. Review the table for a comparison.

Attribute Full Tummy Tuck Mini Tummy Tuck
Incisions Two incisions: 1 low incision just above the pubic bone from hip bone to hip bone; 1 incision around the belly button A single, shorter, low incision
Degree of correction Significant reduction of loose skin and fat from below the ribs to the pubic area; flatten a tummy bulge Mild to moderate reduction of loose skin and fat below the belly button
Recovery Back to work: 1 to 2 weeks
Full mobility: 6 weeks
Shorter than a full tummy tuck

You also do not have to wonder how you will look after your surgery. Dr. Newman will show you many before and after photos of his tummy tuck patients so you can become familiar with the typical results of patients that may be similar to you.

Can a tummy tuck be combined with other procedures?

While a tummy tuck can be performed as a standalone procedure to improve the abdomen — offering more than diet and exercise can alone — the surgery can also supplement other treatments to give patients greater rejuvenation. For example, when a tummy tuck is combined with liposuction, patients can take a confident stride toward their dream of chiseled and sculpted-looking abs. Women often combine breast enhancement and liposuction with a tummy tuck for whole-body rejuvenation called a mommy makeover. Your goals will be clearly outlined and will form the basis of your treatment plan designed during your consultation with Dr. Newman.

Who is a good candidate for a tummy tuck?

Dr. Newman will take a medical history during your one-on-one consultation, as well as evaluate you to make sure you are a candidate for a tummy tuck; good candidates are:

  • Emotionally and physically healthy
  • Lead a somewhat active lifestyle
  • Non-smokers
  • Within 25 pounds of their ideal weight
  • Realistic about the outcome of the surgery

How is a tummy tuck procedure done?

Dr. Newman typically performs tummy tuck surgery using general anesthesia at his private surgical facility in Westchester, NY. An overnight stay is rarely required. This procedure may be performed in the hospital as well, but this is rare.

Dr. Newman makes an incision at the hip bone that spans across the pubic area to the other hip bone. He makes an additional incision around the navel. Dr. Newman will typically request that you bring a bathing suit with you on the day of the procedure.

After separating the skin from the wall of the abdomen, he tightens and sutures the loose muscles. Some patients have lower abdominal or umbilical hernias, and these are frequently repaired at the same time. Next, Dr. Newman removes fat and excess skin. To give an hourglass shape to the tummy tuck results, he can use liposuction to sculpt the hips and waist. The navel is then reconstructed and repositioned to fit your new trim abdomen.

“Today is a week since my surgery and I just saw Dr. Newman for my second post-op visit. I am so thrilled. First of all his staff is wonderful. I am amazed at how I feel now only one week later. Dr. Newman told me that I’d be OK to return to work this past Monday only 3 days after surgery. Honestly, I didn’t believe him but as it turned out he was correct. I returned on Tuesday after surgery last Friday. At this point I have almost no pain and I only have a small bruise on my left side. My result is amazing and exactly what I told him I wanted. I heard from other people how good he is and, to be honest, I’m amazed at how easy this was. Go Dr. N!!!”

How long does it take to recover from a tummy tuck?

A typical tummy tuck patient will return to work within 1 to 2 weeks and regain most of their pre-surgery mobility after about 6 weeks, although experiences vary. Results continue to improve for about 3 to 6 months. Dr. Newman and his staff will advise you about exercise and other strenuous activities and the correct time frame to resume these activities in your particular case.

How can I heal faster after a tummy tuck?

Fatigue, swelling, and soreness are all common and normal side effects during the early part of recovery. Dr. Newman will discuss everything you can do before and after surgery to minimize discomfort and speed your healing when outlining your treatment plan. Some of those steps will include:

  • Changes to your diet and activities before surgery
  • Taking all pain medications in the required dosages
  • Staying hydrated and avoiding salty foods to minimize swelling
  • Wearing your compression garment as directed
  • Using cold compresses, as necessary, to increase comfort
  • Avoiding activities that might strain your abdomen, causing injury
  • Taking short walks between periods of rest to promote blood flow
  • Changing dressings or bandages as needed

You can guide your recovery and secure optimum results by listening to your body. At any time, should you have a question concerning the healing process, you can call Dr. Newman’s offices. He will respond to your question as quickly as he can. Patient care does not end once the surgery has been completed; you can rely on Dr. Newman for advice, no matter how great or small your concern. Most patients are given Dr. Newman’s cell phone number.

When can I sleep on my stomach after a tummy tuck?

Within 2 to 3 weeks, you should be ready to sleep on your stomach, side, or flat on your back comfortably. Initially, it’s best to sleep propped up in bed on your back or in a recliner after your tummy tuck to prevent excess tension on the incision. Patients usually find these positions more comfortable as well.

Can anything be done about a tummy tuck gone wrong?

Revision tummy tuck surgery can be performed when results from the initial procedure are disappointing. Reasons for revision surgery include:

  • Improving the appearance of the navel
  • Revising a wide or uneven scar
  • Moving the scar lower where it’s covered by underwear and bikini bottoms
  • Reducing “dog ears” at the edges of the incision

Most often, these problems happen when a tummy tuck is performed by a surgeon who isn’t appropriately trained or is inexperienced.

Can I have a tummy tuck after a C-section?

A tummy tuck should not be performed immediately after a C-section delivery for several reasons, including:

  • You will need time to recover from childbirth and this is major surgery.
  • The uterus, abdominal skin and muscles need time to shrink.
  • Hormone levels take time to return to normal.
  • You need time to lose the weight you gained during pregnancy.

Once you have recovered, a tummy tuck can improve the appearance of a C-section scar and tighten the excess skin that tends to hang over the scar.

How long do drains stay in after tummy tuck?

Surgical drains may be placed during surgery to prevent fluid from building up in the surgical area. They are usually removed at a post-op appointment about 7 to 10 days after surgery.
