There’s no denying that a baby is a blessing to a family, offering as many joyous, exciting moments as sleepless nights and lifestyle changes. Still, many moms are all too familiar with the long-term effects of pregnancy on the abdomen following the birth of one or more children. To improve the tone and tightness of their midsections once their family is complete, many women opt for an abdominoplasty, also known as a tummy tuck.
But what happens if you have an unplanned pregnancy or decide you want more children after having a tummy tuck?
Can You Have a Baby After a Tummy Tuck?
While it’s usually best to wait until you’ve finished growing your family before undergoing this procedure, a change of mind or an unexpected pregnancy shouldn’t be a cause for alarm.
The abdominoplasty procedure tightens the abdominal muscles and removes excess skin, but this doesn’t prevent your abdomen from accommodating a growing baby. It’s essential, though, to consult with your OB-GYN and your plastic surgeon if you become pregnant after a tummy tuck to make sure you receive the best care for your situation.
Pregnancy After Tummy Tuck: What Are the Risks?
The main risk associated with becoming pregnant after abdominoplasty is generally not to the baby but rather the potential effect on the results of your tummy tuck.
Pregnancy can cause your abdominal muscles and skin to stretch, leading to loose skin or a separation of the muscles (a condition called diastasis recti). This could alter the aesthetic results of your tummy tuck. In some cases, revision surgery may be needed after the pregnancy. That said, every woman’s body responds differently to pregnancy and plastic surgery, and many women still love their post-tummy tuck results even after having more children.
Are There Any Special Prenatal Care Considerations for Women Who Have Had a Tummy Tuck?
While women who’ve had a tummy tuck can generally anticipate a normal pregnancy, tightened abdominal muscles could lead to sensations of pulling or tightness as the pregnancy progresses. These sensations are typically not harmful. If you’re pregnant after a tummy tuck, keep up with your regular prenatal visits and discuss any discomfort or unusual symptoms with your healthcare provider.
What Steps Should I Take If I Unexpectedly Become Pregnant Shortly After Tummy Tuck Surgery?
If you’re still going through your tummy tuck recovery, you may feel anxious about how the pregnancy will affect your body’s healing process. In most cases, you can still expect to fully recover without complications. Inform your OB-GYN and your plastic surgeon to make sure you receive coordinated care. While it’s not typically harmful to become pregnant after a tummy tuck, your providers may wish to monitor you a bit more closely.
How Will a Tummy Tuck Affect My Ability to Labor and Deliver Naturally (Vaginally)?
A tummy tuck shouldn’t affect your ability to labor and deliver vaginally. The procedure primarily involves the muscles and skin of your abdominal wall, which are not directly involved in vaginal birth. However, every woman and pregnancy is unique, so discussing your birth plan and any potential concerns with your healthcare provider is important.
What if I Need a C-Section After a Tummy Tuck?
If a C-section is being considered after a tummy tuck, it’s best if your plastic surgeon and OB-GYN coordinate with each other to plan the best approach for incisions.
Baby Bump and Pregnancy Belly After Tummy Tuck: How Will They Be Different?
The appearance of your baby bump after a tummy tuck may not be vastly different from any other pregnancy. However, you may notice that your belly doesn’t protrude as much as it did during pregnancies before your tummy tuck. This is generally due to the tightened abdominal muscles and doesn’t affect the baby’s growth or development.
If I Gain Significant Weight During My Pregnancy, How Will My Tummy Tuck Results Be Affected?
Gaining a healthy amount of weight is a normal part of pregnancy. However, excessive weight gain can affect the results of a tummy tuck by stretching the abdominal skin and potentially causing separation of the tightened abdominal muscles. Weight gain may also lead to the development of stretch marks.
This being the case, following a balanced diet and engaging in appropriate physical activity during pregnancy is important to maintain a healthy weight gain.
What Is Abdominoplasty Revision Surgery Like?
The revision surgery is similar to the initial tummy tuck. During the procedure, the surgeon will typically work through the original tummy tuck incision to avoid additional scarring. The recovery period is usually comparable to that of the initial tummy tuck.
Mommy Makeover After Pregnancy
You already know that abdominoplasty can transform a post-baby belly into a flat tummy like you had before your children were born. The tummy tuck eliminates loose skin in the abdominal area, tightens the abdomen, and sculpts a more beautiful, youthful shape to the stomach.
A growing number of women choose a tummy tuck with a breast augmentation or breast lift procedure (often called a mommy makeover) for a more comprehensive transformation.
Pregnancy After a Tummy Tuck: Answers to Your Frequently Asked Questions
Here are answers to some of the most common questions women have about pregnancy after tummy tuck surgery:
What happens if I get pregnant after a tummy tuck?
I’ve never had a patient who had a tummy tuck and then couldn’t carry a baby to term. The safety of the mother or baby shouldn’t be a concern following abdominoplasty. You should be able to enjoy your pregnancy and an uneventful birth of a healthy baby.
Will the tummy tuck survive the pregnancy?
Many patients who become pregnant after abdominoplasty continue to love the results even after the baby’s birth. I’ve only had one tummy tuck patient return for a touch-up following pregnancy.
However, pregnancy can alter the results of a tummy tuck. Weight gain, stretch marks, separation of the muscles, and other factors may determine if revision surgery is needed. The outcome may depend a great deal on how much muscle repair your surgeon did during your tummy tuck.
Every woman’s body responds differently to pregnancy and surgery, so it’s important to consult your plastic surgeon as well as your OB-GYN when you learn you’re expecting. Controlling your weight gain during pregnancy can help preserve the results of your tummy tuck. Abdominoplasty revision surgery is an option if your pregnancy significantly alters your tummy tuck results.
Will the pregnancy have any complications following a tummy tuck?
All pregnancies have the potential for complications due to known or unknown causes. Your OB-GYN can best address these concerns. However, a tummy tuck rarely affects a woman’s ability to carry a baby healthily to term. You may experience tightening or pulling sensations as your belly grows and stretches, but this isn’t dangerous. And although your baby bump may not protrude as far as you’d expect, your baby should still have plenty of room to grow and thrive.
What if I need a C-section after my tummy tuck?
I work with my patients to conceal the tummy tuck scar inside underwear or bathing suit bottoms for a completely undetectable result. When a birth by cesarean section comes into play, the main concern centers around scar tissue.
A C-section after a tummy tuck is similar to a repeat C-section. In either case, your OB-GYN is working in the area of a previous procedure. Your OB-GYN may be able to use your existing tummy tuck scar or a low pelvic incision during the C-section. However, they may not close the new C-section incision with the skill of a plastic surgeon, which could affect the appearance of your scar afterward. In many cases, I’ve been present in the delivery room to re-close the incision for a less noticeable scar.
What if I think I want more kids but still want a tummy tuck now?
If you think you may want more children in the future, be sure to communicate this to your plastic surgeon. When one of my patients wants to leave the door open to a future pregnancy, I typically perform less muscle repair or perhaps no muscle repair at all, leaving the body in a better state to accommodate a growing baby. Discuss your wishes and concerns with your surgeon to ensure your best interests are considered, whether you choose to have your tummy tuck now or a few years down the road.
How long should I wait to get pregnant after a tummy tuck?
If you’re contemplating pregnancy in the near future, I’d advise you to wait on your tummy tuck. You can certainly have a successful pregnancy after a tummy tuck. Still, because of the expense and possible need for touch-ups following the pregnancy, waiting until you’re fairly sure you’re done having kids makes sense.
That said, some patients may want tummy tuck surgery when there may be a large gap between children—for instance, if they had their first child in their late teens and plan on further children in their late 20s or 30s. You need to feel confident and happy with your body, so it’s understandable to consider a tummy tuck with the open-ended possibility of more kids in the future.
