With more than 7,000 breast procedures behind him, Dr. Newman has refined his approach to a level of technical mastery that produces consistently excellent, natural-looking results. For Breast Reduction patients, Dr. Newman employs a variety of techniques to reshape the new breast based upon your anatomy and body-type and your desired result. He will typically refine your result to improve upper fullness of the breast- a common request among patients. Dr. Newman frequently uses the central or superior pedicle technique- approaches that preserve circulation to the nipple-areolar complex, maintains sensation, and achieves natural upper-pole fullness while delivering significant reduction. Dr. Newman almost never uses the free-nipplegraft procedure.
Every patient’s anatomy, starting breast size, and desired outcome is different. Dr. Newman discusses incision planning and technique selection in detail at the consultation, selecting the approach that delivers the best individual result with well-positioned, minimal scarring. Patients are counseled on healing and scar management from the outset of their care.
VECTRA 3D imaging — the technology Dr. Newman invented — is available at his practice, allowing patients to visualize simulated results before making any surgical decision.
Yes — for many patients with commercial insurance plans, breast reduction is covered when it is medically necessary. The key factors are your documented symptoms and the amount of tissue to be removed relative to your body size. Dr. Newman’s office can often verify your benefits before your initial consultation and manages pre-authorization from start to finish.
The Schnur Sliding Scale is an evidence-based chart that calculates the minimum weight of breast tissue that must be removed for insurance to consider the procedure medically necessary, based on your height and weight. Dr. Newman uses this scale as part of every breast reduction evaluation. An online calculator is available here.
Most patients take one week or less away from work and resume strenuous activity at approximately three weeks. Many notice immediate relief from neck, back and shoulder pain. Final results are typically visible at three to six months.
Dr. Newman’s office works with most major commercial insurance plans and has established contacts at many of these plans that make the pre-authorization process more efficient. These include NYSHIP Empire Plan, Aetna, Cigna, United Healthcare, Oxford, Empire BlueCross BlueShield, Emblem, and Anthem. Contact the office for a benefits verification before your consultation.
Breast reduction does produce scars, but their placement is carefully planned and they typically fade significantly over time. Dr. Newman discusses incision planning and scar management in detail at every consultation, and patients are given specific guidance on optimizing their healing.
