Male Breast Reduction

Although cosmetic surgery for the breasts is generally associated with women, men occasionally seek breast reduction, as well. Their concerns are often due to a condition called gynecomastia, in which the male breast tissue becomes permanently enlarged. Dr. Scott Newman can help alleviate this condition in men by performing male breast reduction for patients from Westchester, Long Island, and Manhattan, NY.

What causes gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia is usually caused by a hormonal imbalance between estrogen and testosterone. Enlargement of the male breast tissue is fairly common during puberty due to hormonal changes, as well as in infancy due to exposure to the mother’s estrogen, but in these cases, it goes away after a period of time. When gynecomastia occurs in adults, it is not likely to disappear on its own. Gynecomastia is not just a growth of fatty tissue in the breast, such as in overweight or obese adults, but is actually a growth of the glandular tissue in the breast. It can happen in one or both breasts.

Many men who develop gynecomastia are very self-conscious about the size of their breasts. Male breast reduction can help them regain their self-confidence and feel better about their bodies.

Who is a good candidate for male breast reduction surgery?

Because the causes of gynecomastia can vary, it is important to determine if your symptoms may be due to a tumor or other condition, or if they are a side effect of certain drugs you may be taking. Once these possibilities are ruled out, you might be a good candidate for male breast reduction with  Dr. Newman. It is also important to determine whether your condition is due to the actual enlargement of the glands of the breast or fat accumulation. Breast enlargement due to fat accumulation is called pseudogynecomastia and is better treated with diet and exercise than with surgery.

If you are in good health and feel that male breast reduction could increase your confidence, please request a free initial consultation with Scott E.
