Laser Skin Resurfacing

Laser skin resurfacing is a modern alternative to dermabrasion and deep chemical peels for rejuvenating the texture and tone of the skin. All of these treatments create a controlled injury to the skin’s surface, promoting healing in a very predictable way. What the laser adds is a level of accuracy in the depth and intensity that never before existed. Dr. Scott Newman offers the latest laser skin resurfacing technology to help Westchester, Long Island, and NYC patients look more youthful and radiant.

What are the principles behind laser skin resurfacing?

Laser resurfacing works by creating an injury to the skin. While that may sound like a bad thing, it really isn’t. This is the principle behind many skincare treatments and cosmetic pharmaceutical products. The laser’s level of accuracy lets us now not just affect changes to the skin in general, but to change specific issues about the skin with precision.

Lasers give off light energy at specific wavelengths. Different tissues absorb energy at particular wavelengths better than others. Some skin lasers use a wavelength specifically absorbed by water. As the skin is about 97% water, these lasers basically heat up the skin by heating the water in the skin. The precision of the laser allows us to affect the water on the surface or at any particular depth we desire.

What are the advantages of laser skin resurfacing over other options?

Laser skin resurfacing removes highly targeted, very thin layers of skin. The laser is designed to minimize heat damage to the skin. Because it can remove such thin skin layers, the laser is much less invasive than procedures such as dermabrasion. So it is suited for treating even minor blemishes, wrinkles, and other skin irregularities. Recovery time after laser skin resurfacing is only about 2 weeks.

What is the difference between a CO2 laser and an erbium laser?

An erbium laser is even less invasive than a CO2 laser and can often provide good results for individuals with darker skin. Recovery time for treatment with an erbium laser can be as little as one week.

Today is a week since my surgery and I just saw Dr. Newman for my second post-op visit. I am so thrilled. First of all his staff is wonderful. I am amazed at how I feel now only one week later. Dr. Newman told me that I’d be OK to return to work this past Monday only 3 days after surgery. Honestly, I didn’t believe him but as it turned out he was correct. I returned on Tuesday after surgery last Friday. At this point I have almost no pain and I only have a small bruise on my left side. My result is amazing and exactly what I told him I wanted. I heard from other people how good he is and, to be honest, I’m amazed at how easy this was. Go Dr. N!!!

Which laser is best for skin resurfacing?

The answer depends on the condition of your skin and the concerns you want to address. As a dedicated laser center, we offer a variety of the latest options, including:

  • AcuPulse fractional CO2 laser
  • M22 ResurFX™ needs only one pass to be effective
  • Fractora is actually not a laser but instead uses fractional radiofrequency energy to provide skin resurfacing and other benefits.

There is a great advantage to having a variety of technology options available in the practice. Done properly, the results of laser skin resurfacing and other rejuvenation procedures are fantastic. We will personalize a treatment plan for you that may include multiple procedures. Sometimes combining specific procedures yields even better results than a single procedure alone.

I researched every doctor in the NY area that had experience with lower eyelid surgery. When I had my consultation, I felt that my feelings were valued, my questions and answered and I left with more information than I had prior. His facilities are immaculate, his staff is friendly, attentive and approachable. I will go back for other procedures.

What is Dr. Newman’s experience with laser treatments?

Dr. Newman is one of the most experienced plastic surgeons in the New York area using a variety of lasers and other technology-based devices in his practice. The Laser Center at Newman Plastic Surgery is one of the most extensively equipped centers in the region.

It is important to note that, just like anything else a surgeon uses, a laser is just a tool. Different people can use the same tool and get very different results. Dr. Newman and his staff have been using lasers for skin resurfacing since 1998. At that time, he was one of the first doctors in the country to use technology such as CO2 lasers and intense pulsed light (IPL).

The ability to get a good result is as much dependent on experience as it is on the device that’s used. The same hammer that can put a big hole in the wall can be used to very delicately tap in a small nail. The marketplace has become flooded with lasers, and they are now commonplace in spas and clinics where no qualified person is involved. Just as lasers can affect a wonderful change when used well, they can create significant problems when used inappropriately.

Dr. Newman is happy to review your laser treatment options with you in his Westchester; Long Island; or NYC, New York, office. Request a complimentary consultation online to get started. You can also call (914) 423-9000 for an appointment. If you’re considering laser skin resurfacing and live in Scarsdale, Rye Brook, White Plains, or as far up as Greenwich, CT, you can meet with Dr. Newman at our Yonkers location. If you’re in Great Neck, Roslyn, or anywhere else in Nassau County, we have our Manhasset office.
