Liposuction can safely remove stubborn fatty deposits that resist diet and exercise, revealing a leaner, more proportional physique. Thanks to its effectiveness, minimal downtime, and ease of customization, liposuction is a very popular plastic surgery procedure in New York and around the world. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Scott E. Newman is a body contouring specialist who achieves some of the best liposuction results you’ll find in Westchester, Long Island, and NYC.
What is liposuction?
Liposuction is a plastic surgery procedure that removes areas of diet-resistant fat using suction. It is not a weight loss procedure.
What areas can be treated with liposuction?
With meticulous precision and an artist’s eye, Dr. Newman tailors every liposuction procedure to the needs of the patient and the specific areas of concern, which often include:
- Cheeks, neck, and double chin
- Upper back (bra roll)
- Upper arms
- Hips (muffin top)
- Inner and outer thighs
Can liposuction be combined with other procedures?
While Dr. Newman performs liposuction alone, he often combines it with other cosmetic procedures for a more dramatic transformation. Common options include:
Liposuction is an essential part of Brazilian butt lift surgery and is often included in mommy makeover procedures.
Who is a good liposuction candidate?
A good candidate for liposuction is at a stable, healthy weight but struggling to reduce isolated pockets of fat with diet and exercise. Liposuction is best for women and men who:
- Are in overall good health.
- Are not looking for a shortcut to an ideal body or a substitute for fitness and nutrition.
- Have realistic expectations about the results that can be achieved with the procedure.
- Have good skin elasticity and muscle tone, especially in targeted areas.
How much does liposuction cost in Westchester, Long Island, & NYC?
The price for liposuction in New York City and Westchester County varies with the specifics of the surgery, including the areas treated and type of anesthesia used, as well as the expertise of the surgeon. When you visit Dr. Newman for a liposuction consultation, you will be provided with a personalized price quote for your procedure.

CoolSculpting® versus liposuction, which is better?
While both are fat reduction procedures, liposuction involves surgery and CoolSculpting does not. Dr. Newman actually prefers nonsurgical fat reduction with SculpSure® instead of CoolSculpting because he has found it gives superior results, treatments are more comfortable, and there is no downtime. Here are the benefits of each one:
- Liposuction directly removes the fat, which provides immediate results and greater precision than nonsurgical options. It can be used for more significant fat reduction. A single procedure is usually enough to sculpt a specific area.
- SculpSure requires no anesthesia, no incisions, and no downtime to reduce areas of unwanted fat.
If you are unsure about which option to choose, talk with Dr. Newman in a free consultation.
How is liposuction performed?
Dr. Newman usually performs liposuction as an outpatient procedure using a general anesthetic or local anesthetic with sedation. Depending on the number and size of treatment areas, liposuction may take an hour or more to complete. After the medication is administered to ensure your comfort, Dr. Newman makes small incisions, usually less than half an inch in length, discreetly in or near the area of targeted fat. He inserts a cannula (a thin, hollow tube) through the incision and carefully moves it back and forth to loosen the fat. The dislodged fat is removed from the body by a surgical vacuum attached to the cannula. He may use MicroAire’s PAL® Power-Assisted Liposuction System to make fat removal gentler and recovery easier.
What is the purpose of compression garments after liposuction?
Special pressure garments are provided to ensure proper healing and achieve optimal results by:
- Reducing swelling
- Supporting the treated areas
- Shaping the skin to your new, slimmer body contours
It’s important to follow Dr. Newman’s instructions for wearing these compression garments.

How long does it take to recover from liposuction?
Recovery after liposuction is relatively fast and uncomplicated. Under most circumstances, you will be back on your feet in a day or two and ready to return to work in less than a week. Dr. Newman will recommend a time frame for returning to work based on the type of work you do, the extent of your procedure, and the pace of your body’s natural healing process.
What is the fastest way to recover from liposuction?
To ensure the quickest and easiest recovery after liposuction, be sure to:
- Take a few days away from work and other daily activities
- Avoid strenuous physical exertion
- Hold off on bathing and showering until cleared to do so
- Wear compression garments as directed
Immediately after liposuction, it is normal to experience some pain, swelling, and bruising.
What is the best way to sculpt the male chest, liposuction or surgery?
Men from NYC, Westchester, and Long Island with gynecomastia (enlarged male breasts) may need liposuction, surgical excision, or a combination of procedures to improve their chest contours. Dr. Newman performs male breast reduction to reduce and reshape the chest and nipples to help his male patients look more masculine and enhance their confidence.
Does liposuction have risks and complications?
Liposuction is a safe procedure with a long track record of success, but there are potential risks and complications as with any cosmetic procedure. With a combination of experience, surgical skill, and compassionate, patient-focused care, Dr. Newman makes every effort to minimize these risks. During your consultation, he will conduct a physical evaluation to ensure you are a good candidate for the procedure. Use this time to ask questions and address any concerns with him. Your safety and comfort are his top priorities.
Dr. Newman was a pleasure from the start. He was very informative, answered all of my questions, and was very clear about both the procedure and what to expect in recovery. He made me feel at ease moving forward, and confident with the results I could expect. His office staff was also a pleasure, as they were always courteous and attentive. Additionally, the anesthesiologist was great – she took the time to answer all my questions and calmed my nerves. I would highly recommend Dr. Newman and staff!Hala D., Google Reviews
Does liposuction make you lose weight?
Dramatic weight loss should not be expected with liposuction. However, because fat is removed from cosmetically significant areas, the procedure should provide noticeable improvements in aesthetic appearance. There is a limit to the amount of fat that can be safely removed during a single liposuction procedure. Dr. Newman will remove as much fat as is safe and needed to achieve your desired results.
How many sizes can you go down with liposuction?
It is difficult to predict how many clothing sizes a patient will go down after liposuction. Each body carries fat differently. While you should see a reduction in fatty tissue in the treatment area, there is no way to guarantee that it will translate to a change in clothing size.
Who is not a good candidate for liposuction?
Liposuction may not be right for you if you are a smoker, have a serious medical condition, or are seeking dramatic weight loss. Patients who have a large volume of fat to remove are usually not good candidates. In cases of obesity, weight loss surgery, also called bariatric surgery, is a more appropriate option.
Does skin tighten after liposuction?
It’s important to understand that liposuction does not address the following concerns:
- Loose or sagging skin
- Stretch marks
- Irregularities in body contour not caused by subcutaneous fat
Dr. Newman offers other plastic surgery procedures such as tummy tuck, arm lift, and thigh lift surgery to address concerns related to the laxity and appearance of the skin. Minimally invasive Renuvion® treatments can be performed after liposuction to tighten mild to moderately lax skin without additional incisions.
How long after lipo will I see results?
Immediately following liposuction, you will be able to see some initial improvements. Your final results will not be evident until the swelling has subsided. Continue wearing your compression garment as recommended by Dr. Newman. The number of hours the garment should be worn each day will decrease as healing progresses. Soreness and swelling will continue to decrease, eventually revealing the full extent of your results. After a few weeks, healing will be complete, and you can enjoy the new slimmer, sleeker you. Your results may continue to develop for 6 to 12 months.
Does fat come back after liposuction?
Liposuction is a long-lasting method of fat reduction that can achieve attractive results for years. However, if a healthy weight is not maintained after surgery, new fat cells can develop and the remaining fat cells can enlarge. Liposuction is not a substitute for eating well and exercising regularly.
How do you maintain liposuction results?
You can help ensure the longevity of your liposuction results by:
- Adhering to a healthy diet
- Maintaining a regular exercise regimen
- Staying hydrated with water
- Learning stress management techniques
- Getting 7 to 9 hours of sleep each night
Liposuction cannot prevent changes to the body associated with aging. Your body will naturally evolve as time passes, though with liposuction you may still experience the benefits of a more toned body contour.
Is liposuction painful?
In most cases, treated areas are sore for a few weeks but not painful. Dr. Newman prescribes pain medication to alleviate discomfort as needed.
How long will I need to wear compression garments after surgery to get the best results?
The length of time that compression garments should be worn varies with treatment areas and individual patient needs. Expect to wear them for a few weeks. Dr. Newman will give you a more specific time frame during your consultation and at your post-op visits.
Is liposuction or a tummy tuck better?
While both are effective body contouring procedures, the “best” option depends on your needs and cosmetic goals. Here are their benefits:
- Tummy tuck surgery removes lax skin and tightens abdominal muscles that have been stretched and separated.
- Liposuction removes areas of fat.
Dr. Newman often uses liposuction to enhance tummy tuck results by sculpting the waist and hips.
Do you have scars after liposuction?
Liposuction does create tiny scars, but Dr. Newman places them where they are not obvious such as in natural creases of the body.
Does liposuction really work on belly fat?
Liposuction can remove discreet pockets of belly fat on patients who are at a healthy, stable weight. If the abdominal skin lacks elasticity, a skin tightening procedure may be needed as well. Learn more in this blog post.
