Considering a tummy tuck at my Long Island, Manhattan, or Westchester, New York, plastic surgery locations? If so, you probably have plenty of questions about what it’s really like to have an abdominoplasty, from the first consultation to the final follow-up.
In this blog post, I’ll walk you through what you’ll experience before, during, and after your tummy tuck to help you plan for your transformation.
Before Your Tummy Tuck
The days and weeks before your tummy tuck are all about setting the stage for a rewarding experience.
Consultation
This is where your tummy tuck journey begins. During this initial visit, you’ll meet with your surgeon to discuss your vision for your body, plan your surgery, go over finances, and schedule a date for your tummy tuck. You may also discuss other options for achieving a tight tummy, which you can learn more about in this blog post.
Pre-Op Appointment
A couple of weeks before your surgery, you’ll meet with a nurse to review your medical history, make sure you are healthy and ready for surgery, and talk about specific recovery instructions.
During Your Tummy Tuck
Now, it’s time for your board-certified plastic surgeon to safely create the results you’ve been dreaming of.
Surgery
At Newman Plastic Surgery, your tummy tuck will take place in our accredited private surgical suite. During the surgery, I remove excess abdominal skin and fat and, in some cases, tighten core muscles that have become stretched or separated.
Anesthesia
You will be placed under general anesthesia, meaning you’ll be fully asleep and you won’t feel a thing. Our board-certified anesthesiologist will monitor you from start to finish to make sure you stay safe and comfortable.
After Your Tummy Tuck
After surgery comes rest, recuperation, and a renewed sense of confidence.
Your Day-By-Day Recovery Timeline
Here’s what you can expect as you recuperate:
- Day 1: Once you’re awake, a loved one will need to drive you home and stay with you the first night.
- Days 2 to 6: It’s normal to feel some fatigue and achiness, which is easy to manage with pain medication. Focus on getting rest, limiting activity, and sleeping in a recliner to avoid stretching or irritating your abdomen.
- Days 7 to 10: You’ll return to our office for a post-op appointment to remove your drains and assess your healing.
- Days 10 to 21: You’ll continue to wear a compression garment and gradually resume daily activities, including office work and gentle exercise.
- Week 6: You’ll likely feel well enough to resume your full workout routine. Listen to your body and make sure not to push yourself too far, too fast.
- Several Months After Surgery: Your incisions will continue to flatten and fade, residual swelling will subside, and you’ll be left with stunning results.
