What is a Typical Breast Augmentation Surgery Day Like?

What is a typical breast augmentation surgery day like?

This is your typical “itinerary’” for the day of surgery for breast augmentation.

This may vary slightly depending on issues specific to you and your procedure. If your day doesn’t conform exactly to what appears below don’t be concerned.

The “normal” surgical experience for breast augmentation does vary from patient to patient significantly and this is only meant to be a guide.

The times listed below are an example based on an 8:00 a.m. arrival time.

  • 8:10 a.m. – You will be given a comfy robe to change in to. The surgical nurse will do a routine assessment including taking your blood pressure and heart rate. Don’t be concerned if these are elevated. That’s normal on the day of surgery. A urine sample will be needed when you arrive and a urine pregnancy will be performed. This test is performed on all patients regardless of your history. If for any reason you choose not to have a urine pregnancy test on the morning of surgery then you will be required to sign a waiver form.
  • 8:30 a.m. – You will meet with the anesthesiologist who will do their routine assessment. This will be the same anesthesiologist who called you before surgery. You should discuss any pertinent medical, surgical or medication history with them. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Most patients will be asked to take one of the pills prescribed for you. This medication is specifically for the type of nausea some people experience from anesthesia.
  • 8:45 a.m. – You will review all last minute details with me. You will review and sign consent forms and have an opportunity to ask additional questions. This will not be rushed and Dr. Newman will review any aspects of your surgery you have concerns about. Pre-op surgical photos will be taken by me (there are no faces in the photos). Underwear (panties) should be left on for these photos.

I will then make surgical markings on you. This is done while you are standing. (Note: If you are uncomfortable with spouses, boyfriends, or other family in the room watching the surgical marking, as you will be standing undressed, mention it to me, and I will politely ask them to wait outside for a moment.)

  • 9:00 a.m. – Either the nurse or anesthesiologist will bring you into the operating room. The only things you should feel at this point are some normal “jitters” and a needle-stick for your IV. Once your IV is started you should feel no other discomfort. The next thing you’ll be aware of is waking up in the Recovery Room after your surgery.
  • 10:30 a.m. – By now surgery should be over and you will be resting in the Recovery Room. You will be wearing a surgical bra that should feel snug. A family member may be allowed to stay with you in the Recovery Room depending on the situation.
  • 11:30 a.m. – Most patients are comfortable enough to go home after about an hour in the recovery room. A member of the medical staff will take you to your car, which can be pulled up to the back door of Riverside Surgical Services.

The whole process from arrival to departure typically takes about 3½ hours.
