Eyelid Surgery

Although we often think about the toll aging takes on the face, in terms of wrinkles, crow’s feet, and drooping of the chin, we don’t necessarily always think about the similar toll it takes on the eyelids. As your skin ages, it gradually loses its elasticity. This, combined with the constant pull from gravity, can cause excessive skin to collect in the upper and lower eyelids, impairing or interfering with vision and becoming aesthetically displeasing.

Eyelid surgery, also called blepharoplasty, is a popular cosmetic surgery procedure used to improve baggy skin under the eyes, sinking upper eyelids, or drooping eyelids. Eyelid surgery can also treat ptosis—a medical condition that results in a drooping eyelid caused by poor muscle tone or nerve damage. New York City, New York area cosmetic surgeon Scott E. Newman, M.D., F.A.C.S., performs eyelid surgery for his patients from Westchester, Long Island, Manhattan, and surrounding areas to help correct this sometimes crucial problem, as well as to help improve the appearance of the eye area.

Eyelid Surgery to Reverse the Signs of Aging

In addition to collecting lines and wrinkles around the corners of the eyes, fat deposits can also build up in the eyelids and under the eyes. The combination of fine lines and bags beneath the eyes can make you look constantly angry, worried, or fatigued and can also make you look considerably older than you actually are. In addition, excessive fat deposits in the upper eyelid can actually cause them to sag or overhang the eye, obscuring vision.

Eyelid surgery can help correct all these issues. In many cases, eyelid surgery is performed at the same time as a face liftbrow lift, or other facial surgery. Eyelid surgery reduces wrinkles and bags around and under the eyes and reduces fat deposits, tightening the eye area and making the eyes look wider and more alert.

How Eyelid Surgery Is Performed

Eyelid surgery is a delicate undertaking and requires care and skill. Dr. Newman uses very small incisions placed in the folds of the eyelids. These incisions are so small that the scars are easily lost within these natural folds of skin. The upper eyelid is worked on first, with excess skin and fat carefully removed from beneath the skin, and then the lower eyelid is treated. Incisions for the lower eyelid are also made in the small folds of the lid, though in some cases, they are placed inside the lower lid. If appropriate, Dr. Newman might also use lasers to help reduce fine lines and wrinkles.

The eyelid surgery usually takes about two hours to complete. Afterward, you might have dry eyes, which will be treated with medication. Another common but short-lived side effect is sensitivity to light.

I was very impressed by my experience at Dr. Newman’s office. From free initial consultation to final result, the time I spent was well worth it. The results are exactly what I was looking for. It is hard to put faith into a doctor for the first time. I read a lot of reviews online and decided to go with Dr. Newman because of all the good things that I had heard about him. I am very glad that I made the choice to go with Dr. Newman and I recommend him to anyone looking for plastic surgery in the New York City area.

  • Improved self-confidence and self-image – A successful eyelid surgery can make your eyes look younger and more alert, which can contribute to higher self-confidence and an improved self-image.
