Breast Lift

The natural course of life can cause a woman’s breasts to lose firmness and fullness, flatten, and sag. Weight changes, pregnancy, breastfeeding, and even gravity can take a toll. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Scott Newman is a breast enhancement specialist who performs mastopexy, often called a breast lift, to help women from NYC, Long Island, and Westchester, NY, restore a more youthful breast shape and renew their confidence.

Breast Lift Techniques

As one of the most experienced breast surgeons in the metro New York area, Dr. Newman offers nearly every available surgical option when it comes to breast lift surgery. He frequently uses the following techniques, personalized for each patient:

  • Crescent lift (more of a nipple lift): the incision runs around the top half of the areola.
  • Inverted T (also called a Wise pattern or an anchor incision): the incision encircles the areola, runs vertically from the areola to the breast crease, and then along the breast crease.
  • Vertical lift: similar to the inverted T but without the incision under the breast.
  • Horizontal lift: a variation of the inverted T lift without the vertical incision.

He also combines breast lift surgery with breast implants to reduce sagging and increase fullness.

Choosing the best breast lift technique will depend on several factors, such as the severity of sagging, the patient’s desired results, and Dr. Newman’s preferences. During the initial consultation, he will discuss the various techniques in great detail. From there, he will get a better understanding of the patient’s cosmetic goals while making a physical assessment.

Auto-Augmentation Breast Lift

Dr. Newman offers an advanced breast lift technique known as the auto-augmentation breast lift, also called the auto implant, to significantly reshape and lift the breasts from the inside. This technique is ideal for candidates who are not interested in implants but want more fullness and breast projection.

With the auto implant procedure, Dr. Newman recruits breast tissue near the bottom portion of the breast and repositions it in the upper breast to improve projection and perkiness while also increasing fullness in the upper portion of the breast.

Am I a Breast Lift Candidate?

Women who feel their breasts need to be lifted fall into a variety of categories, and the treatment for each often differs. Dr. Newman has more experience performing breast lift surgery than most surgeons in the country. Here are a few common concerns illustrated with before & after photos of his actual breast lift patients.

My breasts are large and sagging.

Most patients who feel their breasts are too large also feel their shape is droopy, saggy, or ‘ptotic.’ For this reason, when a breast reduction is performed to reduce the breast size, it is common to lift the breasts at the same time.

My breasts are small and sagging. I don’t have implants.

Many women fall into this category after losing weight or having children. With weight loss or childbirth, the breasts usually go from larger to smaller, yet the skin stays stretched out. Some patients in this category desire an increase in breast size, while others are happy with their size and just want their shape improved.

My breasts are uneven, and one sags more than the other. I don’t have implants.

It is normal for breasts to be somewhat uneven, but in many cases, breast asymmetry is so significant it causes patients to feel self-conscious. In some young women and adolescents, the breasts develop at different times and rates; so, it is necessary to give the body time to correct itself. Sometimes the breasts never even out. In other cases, the breasts became uneven after pregnancy and breastfeeding.

I do have implants, and now my breasts are sagging or uneven.

It is not uncommon for patients with breast implants to feel their breasts are sagging after a period of time. More commonly the two breasts simply mature differently as time goes on, and differences become apparent. Sometimes this discrepancy is related to the original surgery, and sometimes it is merely the normal aging process. In some cases, this is due to scar tissue or a change in an implant.

Breast Lift With GalaFLEX®

Breast lift results are difficult to maintain over time and can eventually require another surgery. While the longevity of breast lift results relies on the skilled techniques of the plastic surgeon, it is also dependent on the muscles and ligaments beneath the breast skin and the elasticity of the breast skin itself. The procedure’s success greatly depends on the condition of these natural tissues in the breast area.

To extend the life of breast lift results, Dr. Newman uses GalaFLEX support meshing, made out of natural material called P4HB, that acts as an internal bra to support the breasts. GalaFLEX is placed surgically within the breast area just beneath the superficial adipose (fat) tissues and around the nipple. As it supports the tissues, collagen and elastin integrate into the meshing. The meshing is naturally absorbed back into the skin over a period of 12 to 18 months, much like absorbable sutures. The result is longer-lasting breast lift results.
