A silicone breast implant is a type of gel-filled implant that features a silicone outer shell. Filled with silicone gel, these implants come in a great variety of sizes and have either textured or smooth shells. Silicone is a thick, sticky fluid and it closely mimics the feel of natural human fat. Most women, who opted for this type of implant, felt that they look and feel like normal breast tissue.
With that, silicone breast implants are typically approved for breast augmentation procedures in women that are at least 22 years of age, and breast reconstruction in women of any age. It is not uncommon for silicone breast implants to be utilized in revision surgeries, where the result of an original surgery has to be improved on or corrected.
There are currently five FDA-approved silicone breast implants:
- Sientra’s Silicone Gel Breast Implants
- Allergan Natrelle
- Mentor MemoryGel
- Allergan Natrelle 410 Highly Cohesive Anatomically Shaped Silicone-Filled Breast Implants
- Mentor MemoryShape
I had a great experience with my sub-muscular, saline breast augmentation/ breast lift by Dr. Newman. I did not know much at all about this type of surgery other than I wanted to be bigger/fuller. Dr.Newman helped me understand my body type and the procedure and implant size that would suit me best under my circumstances, which I never considered before. I ended up doing a little more than what I initially came in for, to enhance the outcome of my surgery. His suggestions are also very reasonable.Read More My breast are now perky and rounded. It looks like I am wearing a push up bra, with absolutely NOTHING underneath. I can only imagine what I will look like when It is time for me to wear an actual bra (being that it has only been a month so far after my breast augmentation/lift). Although I was flat chested, I was a B-cup and now I can say that I am probably a full C, or small D cup and still look natural. I am already back at the gym and and healing rapidly. My breast lift scars are gradually becoming much lighter and thinner, and I have not had to do any work at all to maintain them. The day after surgery I continued my day normally, even with the medication prescribed which worked very well for any pain or pressure. Also, His follow-up appointments are frequent and consistent so that he can monitor the outcome which is helpful for any concerns or questions. I have had 4 in a month and a half so far. His staff are also very happy and friendly people which I loved. I can not wait for my breast to finish healing so that I can experience my new look in every way possible.CrysBoyer
Understanding The Procedure
During the initial consultation, the surgeon will examine the patient, take a medical history, and establish whether she is suitable for surgery. In most cases, the surgical procedure will be facilitated with general anesthesia. You must do your part by being as fit as you can prior to the procedure; remember to exercise regularly and avoid smoking. During the operation, the plastic surgeon and his or her team will ensure the patient is suitably cleaned, and the operative field is well-prepared and made sterile. After that, the surgeon will proceed to make an incision and open a pocket to insert the silicone breast implants. Oftentimes, the placement of the implant depends on factors like the nature of the selected implant, how much breast tissue there is to start with, and how thin the patient is. Once the final implant is placed, the wound will be closed in layers, normally with an absorbable suture both in the skin and internally.
