A silicone breast implant is a type of gel-filled implant that features a silicone outer shell. Filled with silicone gel, these implants come in a great variety of sizes and have either textured or smooth shells. Silicone is a thick, sticky fluid and it closely mimics the feel of natural human fat. Most women, who opted for this type of implant, felt that they look and feel like normal breast tissue.
With that, silicone breast implants are typically approved for breast augmentation procedures in women that are at least 22 years of age, and breast reconstruction in women of any age. It is not uncommon for silicone breast implants to be utilized in revision surgeries, where the result of an original surgery has to be improved on or corrected.
There are currently five FDA-approved silicone breast implants:
- Sientra’s Silicone Gel Breast Implants
- Allergan Natrelle
- Mentor MemoryGel
- Allergan Natrelle 410 Highly Cohesive Anatomically Shaped Silicone-Filled Breast Implants
- Mentor MemoryShape

Understanding The Procedure
During the initial consultation, the surgeon will examine the patient, take a medical history, and establish whether she is suitable for surgery. In most cases, the surgical procedure will be facilitated with general anesthesia. You must do your part by being as fit as you can prior to the procedure; remember to exercise regularly and avoid smoking. During the operation, the plastic surgeon and his or her team will ensure the patient is suitably cleaned, and the operative field is well-prepared and made sterile. After that, the surgeon will proceed to make an incision and open a pocket to insert the silicone breast implants. Oftentimes, the placement of the implant depends on factors like the nature of the selected implant, how much breast tissue there is to start with, and how thin the patient is. Once the final implant is placed, the wound will be closed in layers, normally with an absorbable suture both in the skin and internally.
What Are The Benefits Of Silicone Breast Implants?
- Breast implants filled with silicone tend to feel more like real breast tissue
- Lower chances of wrinkling and rippling
- Suitable for women with modest breast tissue
- Due to the lightweight properties of the implants, there is a lower risk of downward displacement
How Can Rippling In Breast Implants Be Prevented?
An effective way to prevent or minimize rippling is to insert the implant below the muscle. In addition, sufficient breast tissue must be present and the implant should not be under inflated or oversized. That’s why silicone implant is recommended for the job. They can be even be placed below the pectoralis major muscle of a patient with no breast tissue.

How Long Should You Wait To Replace Or Remove A Ruptured Silicone Implant?
It is rare for implants to need replacement. However, if needed, the patient should undergo treatment within several months from the diagnosis. By choosing a reliable surgeon, ruptured silicone implants are extremely unlikely to happen.
