Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal is a popular hair removal technique that involves using highly focused light energy to destroy hair follicles. It relies on pigment variation between the hair and skin to target and remove only hair with minimal discomfort. Laser hair removal works best on individuals with dark hair and light skin and is considered a more effective technique over options such as tweezing or waxing.
Understanding the Procedure
The procedure involves a number of sessions spaced 4-6 weeks apart. First, hair is trimmed down to a few millimeters off the skin’s surface. Laser light is then projected onto the target area. This light energy penetrates the skin and is absorbed by hair follicles, damaging them.
These follicles start to fall over the course of 1-3 weeks. This session is repeated a number of times to ensure a consistent and permanent reduction of hair. The number of subsequent sessions depends on the unique characteristics of the individual’s hair but averages at about three or more.
What are the Benefits?
- Permanent hair loss for smooth skin
- Less painful than waxing
- Relatively affordable cosmetic procedure
- It is a safe method
- Non invasive cosmetic procedure
- Laser removes multiple hair follicles simultaneously

Am I a Good Candidate for Laser Hair Removal?
Anyone looking to remove unwanted hair is a good candidate for this laser treatment. However, some hair colors and complexions achieve a better result using this method than others. This is because light responds differently to color. A good illustration is how a black t-shirt absorbs more solar energy than a white one.
This same principle causes the pigment in hair follicles to pull the laser’s light more readily than those with less pigmentation. As a result, dark hair (which has more pigmentation) responds better to this treatment. However, advancements have improved results with red, blonde, and gray hair.
How Long Does a Laser Hair Removal Session Take?
The size of the treatment area will determine the length of a hair removal session. Tiny sections such as the lip may only take a few minutes whereas larger areas of the back or leg could take up to an hour. Laser light has the advantage of being able to reach many follicles at the same time, making it a relatively speedy option.
Is the Procedure Painful?
Mild discomfort may be experienced during the removal process. Most refer to it as a short sting, similar to the snap of a rubber band. Skin is further protected from damage by application of a special gel.
How is the Post Treatment Recovery Like?
Patients may encounter minor redness and irritation after the laser treatment. Over the counter solutions, ice packs and aloe vera gel are used to treat this discomfort. Due to the skins sensitivity after the treatment, sun exposure should be completely avoided until the skin is healed. Patients can then use sunscreen with an SPF 30 rating.
Other side effects such as swelling, scarring and redness may occur. These are temporary and should subside soon after the treatment. Blistering rarely happens and is more likely on darker complexions.
