Chemical Peels

A chemical peel is an aesthetic treatment used to accentuate the skin’s appearance, primarily on the face, hands, neck, and chest.  The process involves applying a chemical solution to the skin that makes it peel off. The fresh skin appears younger, more vibrant, and has fewer skin imperfections. We perform chemical peels in Westchester, Long Island, and NYC.

Understanding the Procedure

An acidic solution is used to remove the top layer of the skin, giving way to new, healthier layers hidden underneath. A number of peel options exist to deal with various skin issues. These three types mentioned below are based on the strength and composition of the solution used to perform the procedure.

A superficial peel uses a mild acid to exfoliate only the top layer of skin on the hands, face, chest, or neck. Medium peels utilize Trichloroacetic or Glycolic acid to remove damaged skin in the top and middle layers. The third type, deep peel, uses phenol to target extensive wrinkling or sun damage on the face.

What are the benefits of a chemical peel?

  • Reduces wrinkling and fine lines
  • Removes sun-burnt skin
  • Helps clear acne scars
  • Deals with facial scars from previous injury
  • Reduces hyperpigmentation

So professional, and kind. Very efficient, and I didn’t feel nearly as uncomfortable as I thought I would talking with him. I was scared to have surgery but he put me at ease and I have never regretted my decision. Great doctor.

Is your skin suitable for chemical peels?

Chemical peeling offers the best results on light-haired and fair-skinned individuals. Certain skin characteristics, such as thickness or texture, need to be analyzed before moving along with the procedure. Given that these characteristics greatly vary across individuals, the best approach when considering a chemical peel is to consult with a reputable cosmetic surgeon.

Are chemical peels painful?

The solutions used for superficial peels are gentle. Once applied, a very slight sting can be expected. The procedure may also cause temporal irritation and redness, but these symptoms subside with time as the skin adjusts.

A sharper sting may be expected with deep peel treatments. These are designed to penetrate further into the middle skin and address deep lines and wrinkles. The use of prescribed creams will lessen the effects of the treatment.

How is the recovery process after a chemical peel?

All peels require post-treatment care, and the level of care required is proportionate to the intensity of the treatment. Superficial peels require the least care and heal in between one and seven days. Redness and scaling are expected but gradually reduce with the application of lotion or cream.

Medium peels take about seven to 14 days to fully heal. Just as with superficial peels, redness and scaling also occur.  Swelling often increases after 48 hours and is accompanied by blisters. Daily soaking and application of ointment are necessary for the recovery process.

Deep peels take a week longer than medium peels to heal. The intensity of treatment requires that the treated area be bandaged. Soaking and ointment application are a daily routine, followed by a special moisturizer. Sun exposure has to be avoided for three to six months. Regardless of the type of peel, smoking, and direct sun exposure are to be absolutely avoided due to their potential side effects.
