Reiki Gives A Patient A Better Botox Experience

I must say I'm a bit of a skeptic.  Fortune tellers and astrology never made sense to Dr. Newman, the scientist.  Many people believe in these pseudo-sciences…I've always just thought of it as silly.

Deann Cartwright is my front desk manager- and she happens to be trained in the Japanese methods of Reiki at the level of Reiki Master.  In the past she has tried to explain it to me in a way that a skeptical doctor can understand- she has never been successful.  Until now.

Yesterday I saw a patient who had seen me once before for Botox treatments of her Forehead and Crow's Feet.  Last time I treated her, despite a topical anesthetic, she left the room after only one area was treated.  It wasn't pain or discomfort that was her issue- simply severe anxiety.  When I entered the examination room yesterday it seemed like history would repeat itself.  Deann knocked on the door and asked for a few minutes alone with my nervous patient.  After about five minutes, with Deann at the patient's side, the treatment was completely uneventful, and both I and the patient were astounded.

So, although I still don't fully understand it, Deann has made me a believer.  We will now be offering her services here in my office with full confidence that, as paranormal as it seems, Reiki works.  As for me…I'm a Cancer.

Effective Scar Therapy

Effective Scar Therapy – Silicone Gel

One of the most prevalent concerns for patients contemplating elective surgery is scarring.  Patients will often ask if their scar will be noticeable, especially when they are having a surgical procedure in an area that will not be covered by clothingNYC scar treatment

I am pleased to report that scar therapy has come a long way in recent years – both in the treatment of old scars as well as preventative treatment during the healing process.  While there is no way to completely eliminate scarring, many of my patients have experienced great results with bioCorneum®+,

In 2002 the International Clinical Recommendations were published for scar treatment therapy with only one recommendation for topical (non-invasive) treatment of scars – 100% silicone.  There was insufficient evidence that any other product worked well enough to earn a recommendation.

A patented silicone scar treatment, bioCorneum®+ has been shown to:

·       Reduced hypertrophy rate of fresh surgical scars

·       Flatten, soften and smooth scars

·       Reduce discoloration

·       Relieve associated itch, pain and discomfort of scars

·       Provide an SPF 30UV protection from sun exposure

For best results, I recommend that my patients start applying a thin layer of bioCorneum®+ as soon as sutures are removed.  To achieve optimal effects, bioCorneum®+ must be in contact with the scar 24 hours a day.  A twice daily application of the gel for 12 weeks is usually sufficient unless you have a tendency to form hypertrophic (raised, red) scars or keloids; if so, you may want to use bioCorneum®+ for up to a year.

bioCorneum®+ is effective for old and new scars.  If you have suffered from the long-term effects of scarring, bioCorneum®+ can be applied for the management of hypertrophic (raised, red) scars and keloids resulting from cosmetic and surgical procedures, trauma, wounds and burns.

bioCorneum®+ is available exclusively in physicians’ offices.  I carry this highly effective product in my office as a convenience for you and recommend that all of our patients use this gel as soon as their sutures are removed and the wound is closed.

Laser Hair Removal New York | A Hot Summer Trend

There’s nothing like the euphoric feeling a New Yorker experiences as the first rays of sunshine filter through the clouds and signals the onset of spring.  We immediately begin to anticipate summer and a multitude of fair weather activities after our long and dreary winter winds down.  As we begin to gear up for these activities, we naturally contemplate what it means to shed the heavy winter garb and hit the beach.  That’s why I include laser hair removal as a service to my patients who want to take the hassle out of transitioning into swim suit season.

As a New York plastic surgeon, I recognize the importance of educating my patients about the most effective nonsurgical treatments available.  Recently, laser hair removal has gained in popularity and today, it’s the second most popular nonsurgical cosmetic procedure in America – and its popularity is increasing every day.  Men and women are taking advantage of this safe and effective way to shed excess facial and body hair.

Hair removal lasers have been approved in the US by the FDA since 1997.  Laser hair removal works with selective photothermolysis (SPTL), the application of a specific wavelength of light and pulse duration to obtain optimal effect on a targeted tissue with minimal effect on surrounding tissue.  Light is absorbed by dark objects – in this case the hair and hair follicle – so laser energy can be absorbed.  The laser damages the hair follicle so new growth ceases.

When laser hair removal is administered by a certified technician, utilizing the newest and most effective laser technology, a patient can expect immediate results as the laser is targeted at permanently removing the hair and impeding future growth.

Typically, the removal of hair in a specific area will take 3-6 treatments over a period of 2-6 weeks and effectively terminates the necessity for time consuming and repetitive procedures such as waxing, electrolysis, shaving, tweezing and chemical peels.  As an added benefit, ingrown hairs and annoying skin irritations are eliminated.

The benefits of laser hair removal go beyond the actual procedure as many of my patients experience an increase in self esteem that enhances their confidence.

If you would like to find out if you’re a candidate for New York laser hair removal and take advantage of this proven technology for the safe and effective removal of unwanted hair, please contact my White Plains office at 1-888-PSURGERY for an appointment or visit our website at psurgery.com.  Our newly expanded practice can accommodate all nonsurgical procedures; in particular, you can take advantage of our Euro Laser Services for laser hair removal.

Fuller Lips Are "In" – Part 2

New York City, Manhattan, Long Island, and Westchester, New York

With increasing demand for lip augmentation, I am compelled to share the advantages and disadvantages for the most common procedures I recommend for my patients, including Fillers, Implants and Enlargements.

Fillers – Clearly fillers are the easiest solution.  Currently Juvederm and Restylane, two nearly identical fillers, are most popular.  Although this is a popular choice, the clear disadvantage lies in the fact that fillers are not permanent and must be repeated.  Juvederm, the filler I most commonly use in my practice, lasts about one year with some patients requiring touch-up injections after six months.  Additionally, the injections are minimally painful.  For the comfort of my patients, I numb the lips with a dental-type anesthetic which does not alter the appearance of the lip, thereby allowing me to achieve attractive results.

As an added advantage – and unlike the permanent results of surgical options – the fullness of the lips can easily be controlled with fillers.  Typically, I insert the Juvederm in small doses, allowing the patient to look at the change and decide when they have achieved the desired result.  Some patients even return a few days after the procedure – once they have adjusted to their new appearance – to receive a bit more filler.

Lip Implants – Lip implants are a viable solution for patients that want permanent results.  However, until recently, the primary product on the market was Goretex – the same material used for vascular grafts.  I have discontinued use of this implant for my patients because Goretex doesn’t stretch and patients experience discomfort with simple expressive gestures such as puckering or smiling.  Patients also complained of a feeling of “having a piece of rope” in their lips that would often be visible when smiling.

A newly introduced product may hold promise.  It’s made from the same material that covers the outside of a breast implant so it’s safe and it can be taken out easily if necessary.  My early experience with this product is showing a lot of promise, so I may be recommending it to more of my patients who are seeking permanent lip enhancement.

Surgical Lip Enlargement – I perform two types of lip enlargement surgery – Fat Transfer and Tissue Advancement.  Both are permanent and much more expensive than fillers and implants.

Fat transfer is performed by taking fat from some other part of the body, cleaning it, and transferring it to the lips.  This procedure can achieve a natural looking appearance; however, the results can be unpredictable as the patient runs the risk that a portion of the fat transferred will be reabsorbed by the body.  The second disadvantage to this procedure is healing the area of the body where the fat is harvested.

Tissue advancement is a technique that basically pushes a portion of the inside of the lip toward the outside, thereby increasing the amount of lip that is visible.    The effect of the surgery is clearly permanent but the procedure leaves scars on the inside of the lip and may lead to a loss of sensation.  I recommend this procedure sparingly, mostly to correct asymmetry of the lip where one side is noticeably fuller than the other.

A word of caution – Some doctors that are injecting liquid silicone into the lips.  The use of liquid silicone as a filler is not FDA approved and is therefore an unsafe medical practice in my opinion.  I have seen some disastrous cases of infections, cysts, and even tissue loss after silicone injection to the lips.  Be careful and ask questions!

The interest in procedures for lip enhancement remains huge for good reason…done properly the results are generally wonderful!!!  Most of my patients achieve desired results with fillers and they eagerly return for follow-up treatments when the effects begin to wear off.

Feel free to call me for information or a consultation regarding lip enhancement.  I can be reached at my Manhattan, Westchester or Roslyn Heights office at 1-888-PSURGERY.  You can also email with questions at scottmd5@psurgery.com.

Fuller Lips Are "In" | New York Lip Augmentation

New York City, Manhattan, Long Island, and Westchester, New York

With today’s media driven push for Hollywood-style beauty, fuller lips – whether they are natural or surgically enhanced – are often considered youthful and sexy.   Stars, like Angelina Jolie, Meg Ryan and Jessica Simpson, have popularized the full lip look and created a heightened demand.    As a result, I see many patients who are looking for fuller lips.  In most cases, however, patients are seeking a procedure that will result in a natural appearance.  Facial beauty can be enhanced by fuller lips if the procedure is properly performed.

As this is a popular request, I have made it my priority to perfect solutions that make sense and really make my patients happy.  Several procedures will achieve the desired results – each with its advantages and disadvantages – so it’s important to consider all your options before proceeding.  This is most important because, regardless of the method, fuller lips can only be achieved by adding something to the lips to increase volume.

Procedures To Consider for Fuller Lips include:

  • Fillers
  • Implants
  • Surgical Lip Enlargement – Fat Transfer or Tissue Advancement

The appropriate procedure for each individual should be determined with a physician consultation to make sure the end result looks natural and enhances the overall appearance of the face.  Additionally, the lips should remain sensitive to light touch, and most importantly in my opinion, be kissable.  I will discuss each of the procedures you may want to consider in my next post.

To contact Dr. Newman or make an appointment for a complimentary lip augmentation consultation or to discuss other plastic surgery procedures, call 1-888-PSURGERY or email Dr. Newman at scottmd4@psurgery.com.

Options in Breast Surgery

New York City, Manhattan, Long Island, and Westchester, New York

Plastic surgeons first attempted to create breast implants in 1890 through the use of paraffin injections. Breast implants and breast augmentation surgery has evolved greatly since then.

Common Types of Breast Surgery

Breast augmentation surgeries rate as the most popular plastic surgery today. However, you may not know about some other common procedures that plastic surgeons perform to help women obtain their ideal shape. Some of the most common breast surgeries performed include:

  • Breast Augmentation – using silicone or saline breast implants, this procedure allows women to increase the size of their breasts to be more proportional to their body.
  • Breast Reduction – a procedure used to remove breast implants or excess fat, glandular tissue and skin from natural breasts. Many patients who opt for breast reduction surgery look to alleviate discomfort or to achieve a breast size more proportional to their body.
  • Breast Lift – a procedure used to firm, raise and shape sagging breasts to produce a more youthful appearance.

If you live in Westchester, Manhattan, New York City or anywhere within the state of New York and would like to learn more about your breast surgery options, please contact experienced New York plastic surgeon Dr. Scott E. Newman at Advanced Plastic Surgery.

Body Contouring

New York City, Manhattan, Long Island, and Westchester, New York

Many people seek body contouring both through traditional and new methods. There are several options you may be a candidate for. Dr. Newman will be happy to discuss these options with you. Two body contouring options offered by Dr. Newman include liposuction and tummy tuck.

Liposuction

Liposuction Liposuction, or lipoplasty, is a surgical procedure used to sculpt your body and remove excess fat that doesn’t respond to traditional weight loss methods. The best candidates for liposuction are those who are at or near their ideal weight and have good skin elasticity and muscle tone. Liposuction is often used to treat:

  • Inner and outer thighs
  • Knees
  • Arms
  • Chin
  • Abdomen
  • Hips

Tummy Tucks

Abdominoplasties, also called tummy tucks, can help you obtain a more toned abdomen when diet and exercise don’t help. During a tummy tuck, Dr. Newman will remove excess skin, fat and may tighten the muscles of your abdominal wall. Men and women may be candidates for a tummy tuck if they suffer from:

  • Weak abdominal muscles that cause an abdominal bulge
  • Excess fat
  • Excess or hanging abdominal skin

If you live anywhere in the state of New York and would like to learn more about body contouring, please contact Dr. Scott E. Newman at in New York City. Dr. Newman’s practice specializes in body and breast surgeries so you can be sure you will receive exceptional results.

What Others Say

"I started out completely flat-chested and just wanted something so I can feel a little feminine. Dr. Newman showed me lots of pictures and suggested to me that I go a little larger than we did. I was stubborn and felt that it would be greedy if I went any larger. I love my result and, yes, I do wish I went a bit larger. Dr. Newman did my mother's breast augmentation so this was the best recommendation I could ever get. I would recommend him to anyone as he was the only surgeon I went to who actually listened to what I wanted."
