Many women seek breast enhancement surgery in Westchester, Long Island, and NYC to change the size or position of their breasts. However, some women decide to have breast surgery for a different reason – to bring balance and symmetry to their body contour. Women with different sizes or shapes of breasts face profound embarrassment about their bodies, which can affect their self-esteem and their personal relationships. Surgery can repair breast asymmetry, restoring balance and a more pleasing appearance overall.
How Common Is Breast Asymmetry?
Nearly all women have a degree of breast asymmetry, which means the breasts aren’t perfectly matched in either size, shape or position. The problem tends to begin during puberty when the breasts are developing and cause a significant amount of angst for young women at this time of life. Most will see their breasts even out considerably by adulthood, making asymmetries practically undetectable without close observation.
However, around one-fourth of women find visible asymmetry remains long after adolescence. In some cases, these women may have differences as much as a full cup size. The shape of the breasts can also be different, especially in the case of tuberous breasts where the breasts do not develop correctly. These differences can be a source of significant cosmetic concern, leading many women to seek treatment for their asymmetry.
There are a number of ways in which Dr. Newman can address breast asymmetry at Newman Plastic Surgery & Laser Center:
Breast Implant in One Breast
Dr. Newman can place a single synthetic implant into the smaller breast to make it the same size as the other breast. Silicone implants come in a wide range of sizes and shapes to match nearly any woman’s anatomy. Saline implants can also be placed into the breast tissue and then filled to match the other breast.
Breast Reduction in One Breast
If one breast is larger than the patient wants, Dr. Newman can also perform breast reduction on the larger breast to bring it into proportion with the other breast. This procedure removes excess skin and tissue to reduce the weight and fullness of the breast. In some cases, liposuction may be used to reduce the breast size if the reduction will be moderate.
Breast Implants in Both Breasts
If the patient would like to increase size at the same time the asymmetry is corrected, implants may be used for both breasts. A larger implant will be placed into the smaller breast to bring balance to both breasts. Silicone or saline implants may be used for this purpose, offering the patient ample options to customize the solution to her specific needs and desired results.
Determining which procedure will provide you with the best results will be a decision you need to make with Dr. Newman. He will discuss your concerns, aesthetic goals and medical history to determine which procedure may provide you with the outcome you are hoping for. Dr. Newman will also discuss the details of the procedure with you so you know precisely what to expect in terms of the actual surgery and recovery period.
Most breast enhancement surgeries can be performed on an outpatient basis, which means patients can return home the same day as their procedure. Recovery from breast surgery is generally 1-2 weeks and the results can be enjoyed for many, many years. In fact, as long as the implants are not giving the patient any trouble and she continues to be happy with her results, there is no reason to ever have to remove the implants at all.
