Mommy Makeover

Mommy makeovers have increased in popularity as more and more mothers seek a medical approach to rejuvenating their bodies after childbearing. A mommy makeover is a form of body contouring surgery that addresses multiple concerns in a single operative procedure that usually involves both the abdominal area and the breasts. Board-certified plastic surgeon and body contouring specialist Dr. Scott Newman designs each mommy makeover to meet the specific cosmetic needs of his Westchester, Long Island, and New York City patients.

What is included in a mommy makeover?

“Mommy makeover” is a descriptive term referring to several procedures and not a specific procedure. Each mommy makeover service is customized to the patient and includes a combination of procedures designed to achieve that patient’s individual goals. During your consultation, Dr. Newman will discuss your desired outcomes with you. He will then create a personalized care plan that addresses your needs. Some of the procedures commonly performed in mommy makeovers include:

Breast Reduction

It is normal for the breasts to swell to a fuller size and shape during pregnancy. Many women find that their breasts remain larger after giving birth. This is only a welcome change when it doesn’t impact your physical and emotional well-being. If your larger breast size is affecting you in a negative way,  breast reduction is an option to consider. The procedure removes fat and glandular tissue, tightens breast skin, and reshapes the nipples and areolas to produce lighter, smaller, perkier breasts.

Breast Lift

breast lift can correct breast unevenness and sagginess brought about by pregnancy and breastfeeding. Dr. Newman uses a variety of techniques in his breast lift procedures; choosing the best breast lift technique will depend on the several factors that will be discussed during the initial consultation. If you desire more rounded, smaller, or larger breasts, you may want to consider going for a breast reduction or breast augmentation along with the breast lift. You will be able to deal with problems pertaining to stretched areolas, drooping nipples, and decreased breast volume as well.

Liposuction

Weight gain is normal and almost always part of pregnancy, but after giving birth, many women struggle to restore their pre-baby bodies despite dedicated efforts to exercise regularly and eat well.  Liposuction is a safe and effective option for sculpting a number of problem areas, including the abdomen, hips, thighs, back, sides, arms, and neck. It may be performed independently or in conjunction with a tummy tuck to achieve a more dramatic transformation in the abdominal area.

Tummy Tuck

tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) can tighten the muscles and skin of the abdomen after they have been stretched by pregnancy. The procedure creates a leaner figure by eliminating excess fat, tightening the abdominal muscles, and removing excess, sagging skin that failed to “snap back” after giving birth. If a significant amount of loose skin is present, liposuction alone is typically not enough to achieve an ideal result. A tummy tuck is best for addressing substantial excess skin and weakened abdominal muscles. Liposuction can be paired with abdominoplasty to sculpt the waistline further.

Other Options

Depending on your aesthetic needs, there are other surgical and nonsurgical procedures that can be included in a mommy makeover. Some patients choose to undergo an additional lift procedure (Brazilian butt lift, lower body lift, etc.). Others opt for noninvasive SculpSure body contouring. Nonsurgical procedures like BOTOX® Cosmetic, dermal fillers, chemical peels, and other cosmetic skin treatments are also popular in mommy makeovers. In most cases, multiple procedures can be performed during a single session, followed by one recovery period.

How much does a mommy makeover cost in Westchester & Long Island, New York?

Investment in a mommy makeover can vary greatly from patient to patient. The cost of your mommy makeover will depend on the number and type of procedures you choose to include. In the long run, a mommy makeover with one surgical session and one recovery period can be more cost-effective than undergoing each procedure individually. Cosmetic procedures like those commonly performed during a mommy makeover are not typically covered by insurance. Financing options can be discussed during your initial consultation.

What are the benefits of mommy makeovers?

Mommy makeover patients typically receive a combination of the following benefits:

  • Personalized to their specific needs and goals
  • Firms and flattens the tummy area
  • Removes stubborn pockets of excess fat
  • Restores a more youthful bust
  • Requires a single surgery and recovery period
  • Results achieved sooner than if the procedures were performed individually over a longer time frame
  • Restores one’s confidence and self-esteem that may have been affected by childbirth or pregnancy

What is recovery like after a mommy makeover procedure?

Just as every mommy makeover is tailored to the patient, every patient’s recovery looks different. The length of your recovery period and the discomfort you experience during that time will depend on the combination and extent of the procedures chosen to be part of your mommy makeover. A mommy makeover minimizes overall recovery time by combining multiple procedures into a single surgical session.

Are mommy makeovers only for mothers?

Although the term comes from the popularity of these combined procedures with mothers, you do not have to be a mother to benefit. Any woman who wishes to rejuvenate her breasts and abdomen, whether she has had a child or not, can enjoy the transformative effects of a mommy makeover.

When is the best time to schedule a mommy makeover?

Determining the right time for a mommy makeover is a personal decision made between you and Dr. Newman. Several factors must be considered. You should be fully recovered from childbirth and finished breastfeeding before undergoing surgery. Depending on the procedures you have chosen to include in your post-baby transformation, it may be best to wait until you are done having children to schedule your mommy makeover. Each pregnancy changes your body. If you have additional children after having a mommy makeover, you may reverse the results of your procedures.

Recovery is also an important consideration when it comes to planning your mommy makeover. An extensive mommy makeover that combines many procedures will have a significant recovery period during which you will have restrictions on the activities you can perform. It’s important to pick a surgery date that allows sufficient time for the healing process to take place.

Are you a good candidate for a mommy makeover?

If pregnancy or weight changes resulted in unwanted changes to your body, you might be an ideal candidate for a mommy makeover. These changes can include:

  • Excess and loose skin in the abdominal region
  • Weakened abdominal muscles
  • Deflated or sagging breasts that have lost volume
  • Breasts that are uneven in size
  • Breasts that look out of proportion when compared to the rest of your body
  • Areolas that appear stretched and/or nipples that point downward
  • Excess fat deposits in the thighs, hips, and midsection
  • Stretch marks

A good candidate for any surgical procedure is in good general health, a nonsmoker, prepared to follow all pre- and post-operative instructions, and able to take sufficient time away from work and other activities to recover.

What can I expect in my mommy makeover consultation?

During the initial consultation with Dr. Newman, your general medical history will be reviewed, your areas of concern will be examined, and your goals will be considered. Use this opportunity to discuss what bothers you and raise any questions you have. The goal of the consultation is for you to get to know your surgeon and increase your confidence that you are making an informed decision regarding your mommy makeover. All in all, you and your plastic surgeon will be able to determine whether your goals are surgically feasible and devise a treatment plan that addresses your concerns.

Mommy Makeover FAQ

Will a mommy makeover remove stretch marks on my stomach?

If your mommy makeover includes a full tummy tuck, it will remove the skin below your bellybutton, including the stretch marks. Dr. Newman can address stretch marks in other areas with laser skin resurfacing.

Will I be a smaller dress size after the procedure?

While you probably will not lose a significant amount of weight after a mommy makeover, it is very likely you will lose one or more dress sizes when excess skin and fat are removed.

Is a mommy makeover worth it?

While many moms struggle with spending recovery time and money on themselves, the vast majority of mommy makeover patients tell us having the surgery was definitely worth it. On RealSelf.com, mommy makeover surgery earned Most Worth It Honoree in 2019 through 2022.

Can nonsurgical procedures be added to my mommy makeover?

Yes, your mommy makeover can include nonsurgical procedures to rejuvenate the skin, enhance your lips, and more. Dr. Newman will review your options during your consultation.

How painful is mommy makeover surgery?

A tummy tuck is the mommy makeover option that involves the most post-op discomfort; however, combining it with other procedures usually does not significantly increase pain. The majority of patients prefer to have a single recovery period even though they have multiple areas that are sore at once.

Can a mommy makeover include a tummy tuck if I had a C-section?

Yes! One of the benefits of having a tummy tuck after one or more C-section deliveries is that Dr. Newman can improve the appearance of the scar and tighten the lax skin that tends to hang over a C-section scar.
