As with any major surgery, breast augmentation carries certain risks. Many of these are common to all forms of surgery, but others are specific to breast augmentation surgery. Many risk factors can be reduced through proper care both before and after surgery and by reporting any unusual symptoms immediately.
General Surgical Risks
Since breast augmentation is a surgical procedure, the same risks and possible complications apply to breast augmentation as to any other surgery including:
- Infection
- Swelling
- Excessive scarring
- Excessive bleeding

Most of these general risks can be reduced by closely following these guidelines, which include sufficient rest, avoiding putting too much stress on your incisions as they heal, and taking any prescribed medications according to instructions. If you experience any unusual symptoms or run a fever after your surgery, you should speak to Dr. Newman immediately to prevent serious complications.
Specific Risks of Breast Augmentation
One of the most common risks with breast augmentation is dissatisfaction with the final results. Dr. Newman’s commitment to his patients, including detailed consultations with you before your surgery, greatly reduces this risk. Other risks related directly to breast augmentation include capsular contracture. During healing, a layer of tissue, called a capsule, forms around the implant. Under normal conditions, this capsule remains flexible, allowing the implant to maintain a natural appearance. In some cases, though, the tissue shrinks and contracts, compressing the implant and giving it a hard, overly rounded, too-tight appearance and feel. This can be not only unattractive, but also uncomfortable or even painful. It can be corrected by removing the implant.
