Questions About Breast Augmentation

New York City, Manhattan, Long Island, and Westchester, New York

Who is a good candidate for Breast Augmentation?

Almost anyone who is unhappy with the size of her breasts, or the symmetry between her breasts, and who has realistic expectations about breast augmentation surgery is a good candidate. Most surgeons prefer that breast augmentation candidates be at least eighteen or twenty-one years old in order to ensure that the breasts have fully developed. In addition, if you are planning to become pregnant at any time in the future, be sure to discuss this with Dr. Newman during your consultation.

As with any major surgery, you can expect better results if you are in generally good overall health and if you are a non-smoker, or are willing to stop smoking a minimum of two weeks before the scheduled surgery.

What different options are available for Breast Augmentation?

Depending on the size and shape of your breasts and your ultimate goals for breast augmentation, there are different options for both the type of implant used and the implant’s placement. Different incision placement options must also be considered. During your consultation, Dr. Newman will discuss these options with you, including:

  • Saline or Silicone implants
  • Shape of the implant—rounded or contoured
  • Placement of the incision
  • Placement of the implant—on top of or beneath the chest muscle

Each of these decisions will affect the final look and feel of your breast after the surgery. By discussing your goals for breast augmentation in detail with Dr. Newman, you will ensure the best possible results.

How long is the recovery time after Breast Augmentation surgery?

Recovery times after breast augmentation can vary among individuals, but in general most soreness will disappear within two or three months. In cases where the implant is placed beneath the chest muscle, soreness might continue for six months to a year, particularly during exercise. Since the breasts will be heavier after breast augmentation, wearing a comfortable bra that fits well can help support the breasts and contribute to faster, more comfortable healing.

Recovery time can be reduced by closely following Dr. Newman’s post-surgical instructions, as these procedures are developed especially to facilitate healing.
