What can otoplasty accomplish?
Otoplasty can significantly reduce the appearance of overly large and asymmetrical ears. This plastic surgery procedure is effective in reshaping the ears as well as reducing their size, making them more balanced with the rest of your facial features.
Is otoplasty surgery painful?
All surgical procedures can produce some discomfort. With otoplasty, you may experience some swelling, bruising and mild discomfort for up to 10 days. During this time, over-the-counter analgesics can generally be used to control pain. Swelling and bruising will subside on their own. For significant pain, experienced New York plastic surgeon Dr. Scott Newman can prescribe pain medications, but this is seldom necessary, particularly for younger patients. School and work can be resumed in as little as four days, and final results should be apparent within two weeks.
What is the best age for a child to receive otoplasty?
Ear development matures around five to six years of age. Up to this point, your child’s ears are not ready for any procedure that reshapes cartilage. Fortunately, peer pressure and teasing do not generally start until slightly later in a child’s life, around seven or eight. Having the size and shape of your child’s ears surgically corrected prior to this time can make a large difference in your child’s self-confidence.
Will otoplasty require an overnight stay at the hospital?
Otoplasty is done on an outpatient basis. However, like any surgery, the day following otoplasty can be difficult. It is especially important that children undergoing this procedure have a parent or responsible adult available to them for the first few days after surgery.
Are the results of otoplasty permanent?
In the September 2010 issue of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery magazine, it was reported that recent studies indicate the rate of secondary procedures for otoplasty is around 10 percent. This means that in 90 percent of the cases studied, a single otoplasty procedure produced lifelong results. The earlier the surgery is performed, the longer you can enjoy the benefits of a symmetrical, balanced facial appearance.
