Breast Lift Risks
New York City, Manhattan, Long Island, and Westchester, New York
As women age, the elasticity of their skin diminishes, leading to sagging or misshapen breasts. A breast lift, also known as a mastopexy, is a plastic surgery procedure that can restore firmness, reshape breasts and elevate the nipple. While sagging breasts are not inherently unhealthy, you may be considering the procedure to return your breasts to their former youthful appearance.
Potential Breast Lift Risks
Although the breast lift procedure is relatively safe, there are still potential risks and complications both before and after the surgery. You should discuss these risks and any of your personal concerns with Dr. Newman during your consultation. Some possible complications include:
- Allergic reaction to the anesthetic
- Infection
- Nerve or breast gland damage
- Scarring
Potential Risks with a Breast Lift and Augmentation
If you choose to have a breast augmentation, Dr. Newman may recommend that the procedure be performed at the same time as your breast lift. Breast augmentation and breast lift surgeries carry the same risks but implants can have their own complications such as:
- Capsular contracture – Caused when a scar forms around the breast implant, making it look and feel unnatural and hard
- Implant displacement – Breast implants can move out of the pocket created during surgery and must be corrected with a second surgery
- Rippling – Rippling occurs when the saline or silicone of your breast implant shifts leading to a wrinkle or fold in the outer shell. Depending on the thickness of your skin, the rippling may be visible
