Breast Lift Recovery

New York City, Manhattan, Long Island, and Westchester, New York

Women who experience massive weight loss or breast feed through a pregnancy often experience sagging breasts. Skin loses its natural elasticity over time, so age and gravity will take their inevitable toll, as well. A breast lift, or mastopexy, is a plastic surgery procedure that can restore the shape and firmness of your breasts to their former youth.

To further enhance the size and appearance of your breasts, you may also choose to combine your breast lift surgery with a breast augmentation.  Women who liked the fullness of their breasts during pregnancy as opposed to their post-pregnancy size are good candidates for a breast lift with implants.

Many women considering a surgical breast procedure are concerned about the recovery period after a breast lift. As with any surgical procedure, there is a short recovery period immediately following Dr. Newman’s prescribed recovery plan to achieve the best results.

First Two Weeks

Immediately follow a breast lift surgery, you will experience discomfort, bruising and swelling. This typically lasts about two to three weeks, but Dr. Newman will prescribe pain medication to make you more comfortable. You should avoid sleeping on your stomach and are advised to sponge bathe for at least two weeks. After approximately one to two weeks, Dr. Newman will remove your sutures. Some other tips following your surgery include:

  • Avoid bending over or performing strenuous activities during the first week
  • Stop smoking for two to four weeks prior to your breast lift to reduce your recovery time

First Few Months

During your recovery, it may take a month or more before all bruising and swelling dissipates. Additionally, you will likely experience numbness in your nipples and skin. As sensation returns, your breasts may tingle or burn as the nerves heal. Some other lifestyle changes to keep in mind are:

  • Avoid lifting anything over your head for three to four weeks
  • Avoid lifting anything heavy for four to six weeks
  • Wait at least four to six weeks before starting exercise
  • Continue your regular breast examinations with both your physician and Dr. Newman
