A very popular plastic surgery procedure, liposuction removes stubborn fatty deposits under the skin that have not responded to diet and exercise. New York City area plastic surgeon Dr. Scott E. How Liposuction is Performed

A relatively simple procedure, liposuction has increased in popularity as techniques have been refined over the last few years. The size of the necessary incisions has gone down, and complications have also gone down, making liposuction one of the safest available plastic surgery options.

Depending on how many areas you have treated, and how large these areas are, liposuction takes an hour or more to complete. Small incisions, usually less than half an inch in length, are placed discretely in the area. A small cannula, or tube, is then inserted and vacuum suction used to remove fat.

Liposuction is intended to remove fairly small deposits of fat. The best candidates are close to their ideal body weight and only wish to have a few areas treated to improve overall body contours. If irregularities in body contour are caused by factors other than subcutaneous fat, liposuction will not help, and another treatment should be considered.

Recovery After Liposuction

Immediately after liposuction, you will experience swelling and bruising. Special pressure garments provided for you to wear will help reduce the swelling and help support treated areas. You will be back on your feet in a day or two and ready to return to work in less than a week, under most circumstances. The recovery time is relatively fast and uncomplicated, especially if compared to more invasive procedures such as a tummy tuck.

You will be able to see the results of your liposuction procedure immediately, but results will appear even more dramatic as healing progresses and swelling subsides. After a few weeks, healing will be complete and you can enjoy the new, slimmer, sleeker you.
