How Laser Skin Resurfacing Works

Laser skin resurfacing makes use of a laser, usually a CO₂ laser, to remove highly targeted, very thin layers of skin. The laser is designed to minimize heat damage to the skin. Because the laser can remove such thin skin layers, it is much less invasive than procedures such as dermabrasion, and so is suited to treat less extensive blemishes, wrinkles and other skin irregularities. Recovery time after laser skin resurfacing is only about two weeks.

An erbium laser can also be used for laser skin resurfacing. The erbium laser is even less invasive, and can often provide good results for individuals with darker skin. Recovery time for treatment with an erbium laser can be as little as one week.

The Conditions Laser Skin Resurfacing Treats

Laser skin resurfacing is effective in treating fine lines and wrinkles, mild acne scars, birthmarks and even certain types of skin cancer. Laser skin resurfacing is not recommended for severe scarring, stretch marks or active acne outbreaks. It is also not always recommended for individuals with very dark skin, as it can alter skin coloration. However, use of an erbium laser can be more successful for dark skin tones, so ask Dr. Newman about this option during your consultation if it is a concern for you.
