Although we often think about the toll aging takes on the face, in terms of wrinkles, crow’s feet and drooping of the chin, we don’t necessarily always think about the similar toll it takes on the eyelids. Eyelids can droop and sag with age, sometimes even interfering with vision. New York City, New York area cosmetic surgeon Scott E. Newman, M.D., F.A.C.S., performs eyelid surgery for his patients to help correct this sometimes crucial problem, as well as to help improve the appearance of the eye area.

Eyelid Surgery to Reverse Signs of Aging

In addition to collecting lines and wrinkles around the corners of the eyes, fat deposits can also build up in the eyelids and under the eyes. The combination of fine lines and bags beneath the eyes can make you look constantly angry, worried or fatigued, and can also make you look considerably older than you actually are. In addition, excessive fat deposits in the upper eyelid can actually cause them to overhang the eye, obscuring vision.

Eyelid surgery, also called blepharoplasty, can help correct all these issues. In many cases, eyelid surgery is performed at the same time as a face lift, forehead lift or other facial surgery. Eyelid surgery reduces wrinkles and bags around and under the eyes and reduces fat deposits, tightening the eye area and making the eyes look wider and more alert.

How Eyelid Surgery is Performed

Eyelid surgery is a delicate undertaking and requires care and skill. Dr. Newman uses very small incisions placed in the folds of the eyelids. These incisions are so small that the scars are easily lost within these natural folds of skin. The upper eyelid is worked on first, with excess skin and fat carefully removed from beneath the skin, and then the lower eyelid is treated. Incisions for the lower eyelid are also made in the small folds of the lid, though in some cases they are placed inside the lower lid. If appropriate, Dr. Newman might also use lasers to help reduce fine lines and wrinkles.

The eyelid surgery usually takes about two hours to complete. Afterward, you might have dry eyes, which will be treated with medication. Another common but short-lived side effect is sensitivity to light.

What Others Say

"I started out completely flat-chested and just wanted something so I can feel a little feminine. Dr. Newman showed me lots of pictures and suggested to me that I go a little larger than we did. I was stubborn and felt that it would be greedy if I went any larger. I love my result and, yes, I do wish I went a bit larger. Dr. Newman did my mother's breast augmentation so this was the best recommendation I could ever get. I would recommend him to anyone as he was the only surgeon I went to who actually listened to what I wanted."
