Breast enhancement can be a life-changing experience, improving your self-confidence and overall body image. However, the decision to undergo breast surgery is deeply personal and should only be made after you have done extensive research into your procedure.
Ideal candidates for breast enhancement should be in good overall health, understand all of the risks and benefits involved in the procedure, and have realistic expectations for the outcome of the surgery. At your initial consultation, New York City plastic surgeon Dr. Scott Newman will listen carefully to your aesthetic goals in order to help determine whether you are a suitable candidate for the procedure.
Aesthetic Issues Addressed by Breast Enhancement
Breast enhancement is commonly performed to:
- Increase the size of small breasts
- Correct breast asymmetry
- Restore lost fullness and volume due to pregnancy or weight loss
- Correct mild sagging issues
- Restore lost firmness
Generally, breast enhancement will not be effective for correcting significant sagging issues. In these situations, Dr. Newman may recommend a breast lift in conjunction with your breast augmentation.
Breast Enhancement and Pregnancy
While the desire to become pregnant down the road does not rule you out as a candidate for breast enhancement, it is a factor that should be considered when deciding whether or not to undergo the procedure. Future pregnancies can potentially impact your results, diminishing the effectiveness of your procedure.
In general, it is a good idea to wait until you are done with childbirth before undergoing breast enhancement. In order to ensure that you fully understand the impact of future pregnancies on your results, you should discuss these plans with Dr. Newman at your initial consultation.
Breast Enhancement and Teenagers
The FDA has approved saline breast implants for use in women over the age of 18 and silicone breast implants for use in women over the age of 21. However, meeting these minimum age requirements does not necessarily ensure that you are a suitable candidate for breast augmentation. There are several factors that must be evaluated when breast enhancement is being performed on a teenager or young adult.
Many women do not have fully developed breasts until their early-to-mid 20s. As a result, deciding to undergo breast enhancement between the ages of 18 and 22 may be a bit premature since you may not yet know what your final breast appearance will be. Additionally, many teenagers experience body image issues which go away as they mature. Therefore, it is important to evaluate the emotional maturity of teenage breast enhancement candidates before moving forward with the procedure.
